Findings from a local study into how older people access health information available

Findings from a study into how older people access health information have been released.

The study of more than 100 Cantabrians aged over 65 show that two thirds had used the internet to search for health information in the last year and more than half were extremely or quite confident searching for health information online.

Offline, it was found that general practice, pharmacy and brochures were the sources most used to find health information.

Researchers from ARA Institute of Canterbury's Department of Nursing, Midwifery and Allied Health, supported by Canterbury Clinical Network’s Health of Older People Workstream (HOPWS), surveyed 134 people in community pharmacies, community exercise classes and in retirement villages, during 2016 and 2017 to gather the information.

The results will help planning and targeting of health information aimed at keeping older people safe and well in their own homes and communities.
