The Pharmacy Service Level Alliance (PSLA) is supporting innovation in pharmacy services and enhancing the contribution of pharmacy to the patient's health care team. Established in 2010, the PSLA provides strategic direction, design, prioritisation and leadership for Community Pharmacies (with input from secondary/tertiary pharmacy services) across the Canterbury Health System.

Specifically, the PSLA is supporting and promoting the contribution of the Pharmacist in a patient’s multi-disciplinary primary health care team and initiatives that free up pharmacist's time for better patient focused care.

Currently the PSLA is leading the development of a local response to the national Pharmacy Action Plan. This involves progressing the ongoing transformational work in Canterbury, investigating and recommending how pharmacy in Canterbury can better contribute to the objectives of the Canterbury Health System and the New Zealand Health Strategy.

Key Messages from the Pharmacy Service Level Alliance - February 2021

  1. Pharmacy Service Level Alliance (PSLA) members welcomed Professor Ekant Veer from the School of Business, Canterbury University. Ekant brings an academic perspective to the PSLA. 

  2. Three pharmacists have been trained in the Meihana model, a framework bringing together clinical and cultural competencies to ensure clinical practice is culturally safe for Māori. PSLA is reviewing options for wider roll-out to community pharmacy.  

  3. Reframing of the Long Term Conditions service remains under discussion. 

  4. The Enhanced Opioid Substitution Therapy Project has been successfully rolled out to 10 pharmacies during stage one. During Q3 and Q4 the remaining 80 pharmacies will be onboarded to the e-platform.

  5. PSLA received an update from Deborah Callahan, CDHB Service Manager for Service Continuity, regarding the planning underway for the roll out of the COVID-19 vaccine.
