The Falls and Fracture Service Level Alliance was established in October 2017 as a time-limited (3 year) group to enhance and improve the falls and fragility fracture prevention work in Canterbury. 

The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) identified that falls injuries are often the marker of fragility and other healthcare issues, which require significant dependence on the health system. By having a cross-agency approach (ACC, Ministry of Health, District Health Boards and the Health Quality & Safety Commission) it is hoped that we can reduce both the number and severity of falls across New Zealand, specifically for people aged 65 and over.

The key outcomes to help keep Agnes, our prototypical patient, well and independent at home are:

  • fewer falls injuries; 
  • fewer serious harm falls and fractures;
  • improved recovery (both hospital and home);
  • integrated falls and fracture care across the system.

The SLA aims to build on outcomes achieved by the Canterbury health system over the last five years through taking a comprehensive ‘Whole of System Approach to Falls Prevention’ and the development of an innovative evidence-based community falls and fracture prevention strategy.
