Proud Samoan and Ōtautahi/Christchurch local Mahlon Saumalu started with the CCN Leadership Team in March and is bringing a rangatahi - youth perspective to the table to help improve health services for our young people.

Ensuring the rangatahi (youth) voice is heard across our Canterbury health system is the goal of Chelsea Skinner, who is a new CCN leadership team member with a youth perspective.

A project to develop a new model of care for people living with chronic pain has been given the green light. The new model will be co-designed by people living with chronic pain – a long term condition which often starts as an injury, accident, or illness. They’ll work with primary care and specialist clinicians to develop clinical and social supports for people suffering from chronic pain in the community.  

At times like these, it’s all hands on deck to ensure our essential services can keep serving our most vulnerable people. Many areas of the CCN work have been paused to allow planning and funding leads to focus on areas of work, and to allow members of our programme team to be redeployed as needed.

The team behind Canterbury's Better Breathing Programme has been thinking outside the box for ways to support some of our most at-risk members of the community - people with long-term breathing conditions like Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).

We’ve all heard the saying you can’t pour from an empty cup, meaning that for us to effectively take care of others we must first take care of ourselves. Sometimes this is easier said than done, but for our colleagues on the health frontline, it’s more important now than ever.

Since COVID-19 first reached our shores, the way we use technology to support patients has been firmly in the spotlight. As we enter the third year of a global pandemic and a new variant is at the forefront of everyone’s minds, the Shared Care Planning team is exploring how shared care plans can support health care teams to have important conversations about medical decisions with their at-risk patients.
